An elastic pet collar with a eye catch closure, can be safer than the traditional fabric collar. It will have some give, which is fine, but will not easily come off if your pet should climb up a tree and get caught in a branch.
A collar with a break away clasp is by far the safest collar for you to purchase for your cat. The latch on these collars snap lose whenever enough pressure is applied thereby allowing your cat to slip free if needed.
There are a couple of ways to help make sure your cats collar is safe. First you should be able to slide two fingers between the collar and your cats neck. This will allow enough room for the cat to release itself from the collar should it become tangled. Next make sure the material can be easily cut if need be. Some of the materials cat collars are made from cannot be easily cut. So make sure you can cut through the collar before you purchase. Nylon collars can be easily cut but the material can snag. Fortunately they do make nylon cat collars with non snag material. This is something to look for when purchasing a collar. Using some of these tips:
- looking for a collar which is flexible and can be cut easily
- looking for a collar with a break away clasp
will assist you in purchasing the best cat collar. No most of them are not beautiful, designer collars but they will keep your cat safe.
[...] Many people choose to have cats for pets. Far too common of a scene is an inurred cat motionless on the road; or worse yet, a cat that has lost his or her life due to being struck by a car or other motor vehicle. This is not always the drivers fault. Many drivers, passengers, and home owners can attest to the fact that cats seem to have a knack for running out into the street at the most inopportune times. This scenario is especially true at night where many resedential roads have a limited number of street lights. It is important for all outdoor cat owners to provide their furry friends with a reflective cat collar. [...]
I want to buy my two little kitties collars, they both have breakaway collars on now but I am not sure if they are the right ones. I am nervous about collars but know they are necessary. The ones I have are from Petsmart and they have safe cat written on the catch. My little one has outgrown hers and needs a new one. I have my two year olds name embroidered on his but would buy him a new one in a heartbeat if you think it is not a good one.
thank you so much for your help

Martha,
I would not be too concerned with purchasing a new collar for your cat if he is an indoor cat. If you let him outside for fresh air, or even if he gets past you when the door is open, like my cat, then I would invest in a collar with a break-away clasp. You never know what may happen. For instance, just the other day, my cat, Gizmo, came in from outside and his collar was gone. There are a lot of fenced in properties in our area and I’m sure he was somewhere he had no business. I was grateful that his collar had a break-away clasp at that moment. I’m sure you can find a collar with a break away clasp which can be personalized for your kitty. You may have to purchase online though.
just what goes up, must come down?

…I know they’re the best, the safest, and I’ve been buying them for a couple of years from various brands… but, yet again my trollop of a cat has managed to lose hers.
Our neighbour has dropped it off to us, twice(embarrassingly scrapping with their cat in their yard of course). We’ve found it in the bushes/front yard a couple of times… but gah!
We couldn’t find it this week after a search, so we used her old one (usually get a new one once a year as the nylon gets ratty & the reflective bits crack/dull) and our other cat’s name tag (she passed away 6 months ago but figured she wouldn’t mind if it meant our number was on her ‘sister’) as a stop gap until we could get a new one engraved.
Different brand than her newest Rogz one, and yet again lost. Anyone got any brand suggestions for collars that do snap open – but only after *enough* force? I’m not talking a scrap with the neighbours cat here. 4kg dangling from a tree limb? Arm stuck through the collar perhaps?
Or like others, am I resigning myself to buying collars in bulk packs of 10 along with pre-engraved name tags.
